There are two types of Springer Spaniels: the English Springer Spaniel and the Welsh Springer Spaniel. But, what many of us don’t know is the fact that the English Springer Spaniel is the founder of all the Spaniel breeds.
The Welsh Springer Spaniel and other similar breeds were developed during the 17th century to meet the high demands of hunting dogs. So, most of the time when we talk about the Springer Spaniel, we refer to the English Spaniel and not the Welsh Spaniel. The reason for that is pretty simple – both of the breeds have more or less the same personality traits, so it’s better to talk about the founder than the one that has been found!
Springer Spaniels are considered as compact, medium sized gun dogs. They have thick coats and their ears, and legs are especially covered with dense hair. The coats are usually brown and white in color but can also be black and white, only white and completely brown.
Male Springer Spaniels have an average height of 20-21 inches whereas females have an average height of 18-20 inches. The average weight for male Spaniels is around 50-55 pounds whereas females have an average weight of 45-50 pounds. The whole breed is expected to live for around 14-15 years if kept healthy.
